Best of the Bay: Beulah Land Bar-B-Q
is the
Editors' pick for .
. .

Best Barbecue Overall

Beulah Land understands ribs, and
that's the starting place for barbecue.
It's the best overall barbecue since the demise of the Rib Rack on Gregory
Street (for those who remember). Beulah Land does everything well, in its
truest form. The sides are basic - beans, slaw, potato salad, chips - but
good. The fact that it's a locally owned original is a bonus. The pile of
split hickory behind the restaurant testifies to the authenticity of the
wood-smoked food. And before you leave, buy a bottle of Allen's personal
recipe barbecue sauce for your home pantry. It makes your home barbecue
instantly better.

Best Barbecue Ribs

Beulah Land Bar-B-Q,
6020 W. Nine Mile Road, Pensacola. Beulah Land Bar-B-Q is such a joy -
meaty, tender, juicy ribs, with the perfect sauce, time after time after
time. Owner Doug Allen is an alumnus of Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Ala.,
which should be 'nuff said for aficionados. Beulah Land is a bit of a trip
- the western end of Nine Mile Road, across from Coastal Airport - but the
consistent quality of the ribs (especially the tenderness), makes it stand
out. The building might be modest, but the barbecue is boastful. And the
ribs come with white bread - a Southern tradition that makes sopping up
the sauce easy. |
